What exactly is Natal Commons?
Natal Commons creates professionally-facilitated postpartum support networks or “micro-communities” where 10-14 families with babies 0-2 years old build lasting care relationships over 12 months. We're not just a parenting group—we're a structured journey that teaches families how to create sustainable community support systems using evidence-based frameworks for communication and connection.
-
What if I'm introverted or struggle with group settings?
Our facilitation specifically creates space for different participation styles. We honor all experiences; there's no pressure to have answers or give advice. Many introverted parents find our structured approach more comfortable than typical social groups because the guidelines create predictable, safe interactions.
-
What if someone is experiencing serious postpartum challenges?
Our facilitators are trained to recognize signs of postpartum mood disorders and can provide appropriate referrals. While we're not therapy, our model of regular check-ins and community support often helps identify when additional professional support is needed.
-
How is this different from other mom groups or postpartum support?
Unlike casual parent groups or online communities, Natal Commons provides:
- Professional facilitation using proven frameworks (Parker Palmer's Circles of Trust, Nonviolent Communication, and Transformed by Birth)
- Structured reciprocity through organized care rotations that ensure balanced giving and receiving
- Identity transformation support through dedicated spaces like Matrescence Gatherings
- 12-month journey that gradually builds from intensive support to self-sustaining community
- Hyperlocal focus with families in close geographic proximity for practical, ongoing support
-
What does a typical pod look like?
Your pod consists of 10-14 families with babies ages 0-2 years who live in close proximity. Over 12 months, you'll participate in:
- Hearth Circles: Structured gatherings for deep listening and connection
- Matrescence Gatherings: Monthly ritual space for birthing parents to process identity changes
- Care Partner Nights: Dedicated space for non-birthing partners and support people
- Daily Weather Reports: Simple emotional check-ins to identify needs
- Care Rotations: Weekly structured support focusing on specific families
These foundational rituals are accompanied by a comprehensive online platform for conversation, resource-sharing, and connection.
-
How much time commitment is involved?
The commitment varies by phase:
Formation (0-2 months): Bi-weekly Hearth Circles (90 min), monthly gatherings, daily check-ins
Transition (3-6 months): Monthly Hearth Circles, continued gatherings, care rotations
Mature (7-12 months): Monthly professional check-ins, member-led activities
Plus optional connection activities like potlucks, walks, and book clubs that emerge organically. Everything is by invitation, not compulsion.
-
How much does it cost?
We use a sliding scale model to ensure accessibility:
Formation Phase: $175-350/month (10% pay low tier, 50% mid tier, 40% high tier)
Transition Phase: $138-300/month
Mature Phase: $100-250/month
Commons Connect (digital-only option): $40/month
-
Do partners/support people participate?
Yes! While some activities center birthing parents, we include partners and key support people through:
Care Partner Nights specifically for non-birthing parents
Family-inclusive activities and care rotations
Recognition that strong support networks benefit everyone

-
Is this only for first-time parents?
No! We welcome families with babies 0-2 years old, whether it's your first child or you're adding to your family. Parents with older children often bring valuable wisdom while still needing support during postpartum transitions.
-
Do I need to be married or have a partner?
Absolutely not. Single parents, partnered parents, and families of all configurations are welcome. Our care rotation system is especially valuable for single parents who may have fewer built-in support systems.
